South Atlantic S 500

South Atlantic S 500 Windvane Self-Steering System

Designed for ocean-going yachts from 30 to 42 feet.

The South Atlantic S 500 is a servo auxiliary rudder system based on state-of-the-art, servo-controlled technology to ensure completely reliable steering on the high seas. Unlike conventional systems that act on the boat's main wheel or tiller via control lines, on this model a servo pendulum rudder directly drives an independent auxiliary rudder.

Since its own auxiliary rudder steers the boat, the system operates as a completely self-sufficient unit. This mechanical design guarantees maximum power and precision without transferring additional friction or load to your boat's primary steering gear.

"The silent crew member that never sleeps and never gets tired."

"Simple, robust, and reliable: South Atlantic windvanes – making life on board easier with every mile."

South Atlantic S 500

S 500

The S 500 uses a servo pendulum rudder to directly control a separate auxiliary rudder. The entire unit features the same high-quality design characteristics as the S 500 basic series. The housing is made of high-strength, seawater-resistant cast aluminum alloys. The connection between the servo pendulum rudder and the auxiliary rudder is made via a stainless steel rod that can be uncoupled in just a few simple steps. The servo rudder can easily be flipped up, while the auxiliary rudder is designed to remain in the water. As soon as the servo pendulum rudder is in its operating position, it can be coupled to the rudder in no time.

A reliable additional crew member: A South Atlantic is the most important workhorse on all your passages. It is at work 24 hours a day to keep the boat on course – quietly, naturally, and reliably, without requiring attention or getting tired.

  • No power consumption: Reduces your dependence on complex charging systems and vulnerable on-board electronics.
  • Mechanical reliability: Just as diesel engines did not replace sails on an ocean crossing, electronic autopilots cannot surpass the silent reliability of a mechanical self-steering system.
  • Weight: approx. 30 kg
  • Length overall (LOA): S-500 Series: up to 12 m / 42 ft
